Robert Rauschenberg - Oil On Canvas - 1964

Robert Rauschenberg was an American painter and sculptor who played an important role in the Pop Art Movement. Tracer was one of the 79 silkscreen paintings that he made between 1963-1964 in which the images were influenced by everyday materials and information.Silkscreen is a unique method of painting which involves stenciling technique, although it had been around for centuries, it was popularized byAndy Warhol. These paintings were a combination of paintings and printing, a collage of random conflicting pictures, the helicopter, the bald eagle and a painting of Venus on her Toilet (ca 1613-1615) by Peter Paul Reubens,a clear symbol of beauty and love. The painting presents symbols and images of modern life, conscious of it’s outside world, using symbols to allude to the Vietnam War. His work marked a shift towards Pop Art, whilst still holding on to the boldness of Expressionism. Rauschenberg famously said, “paintings are related to art and life” and he strived to work in the gap between the two.
