The Last Judgment Triptych is a masterpiece of Netherlandish painting attributed to Flemish artist Hans Memling. Painted between 1467 and 1471, this stunning work of art is now housed in the National Museum in Gdańsk, Poland.

Commissioned by Angelo Tani

The Last Judgment Triptych was commissioned by Florentine banker Angelo Tani, an agent of the Medici at Bruges. Tani was a man of great influence and had been the director of the Bruges branch of the Medici bank from 1455 to 1469. The triptych was likely intended for the convent church of Fiesole, where Tani possessed a chapel dedicated to Saint Michael.

Composition and Symbolism

The central panel of the triptych depicts Jesus Christ sitting in judgment on the world, while Saint Michael the Archangel weighs souls and drives the damned towards Hell. The sinner in St. Michael's right-hand scale pan is a donor portrait of Tommaso Portinari. On the left-hand panel, the saved are being guided into heaven by Saint Peter and angels. On the right-hand panel, the damned are being dragged to Hell.

Artistic Significance

The Last Judgment Triptych is a testament to Memling's skill as an artist. The intricate details and vivid colors used in the painting create a sense of depth and emotion. The triptych has undergone restoration in 1851 and remains one of the most important works of Netherlandish art.
