"Life (also known as La Vita)"

Giovanni Segantini - 1898

Giovanni Segantini was an Italian Painter, towards his later life, his style became more Divisionist with symbolist images of nature. He was renowned for his portrayal of pastoral life, using the theme of nature and people’s connection with nature
he used the term, “Naturalist Symbolism” to describe his work. In La Vita, he depicts high mountains, with peaks that are catching the last sun rays, everything in the valley is shadowed as twilight descends on the meadows. In the foreground is a woman waiting for her cow while it drinks water. There are two figures carrying heavy loads, walking across in the midground. Bare trees on the canvas emphasise a melancholy
in the distance is a small house that hints at a village that exists beyond our sight. The shadows and contours are threaded with long parallel strokes which help to suggest the hushed atmosphere of the valley at dusk. Art historian Robert Rosenblum described Segantini as transforming "the earthbound into the spiritual".
