"Zomerweelde"

Jacobus Van Looy

“Zomerweelde” stays in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. In the background, Jacobus’ house and lawn are visible. Till 1884, he lived in Haarlem. Then, he received Prix de Rome which gave him the permission to move and travel to different countries. His home was now in Amsterdam but by 1894, he got married and moved to Soest, where this painting was set. Even before moving to Soest, Jacobus expressed his love for nature in a number of paintings. Notably, one of them was De Tuin, 1893, which was similarly set in a small garden, close to his home in Amsterdam. Marjolijn Creton, a colleague of Rijksmuseum’s front office, spoke about how Jacobus was highly inspired by Van Gogh’s landscape paintings. At the same time, he deviated with a farther attention to smaller details in nature. Sadly, Jacobus was often criticized for a lack of deep in composition. Thus, he started to write about his paintings and ironically enough, he gained more success as a writer than as a painter.
