"The Mackerel Shawl"

Algernon Talmage

Algernon Talmage was a British Impressionist painter who lived from 1871 to 1939. He is most known for instructing Emily Carr while she was studying in St Ives, England, where he lived and worked in his studio, which was then known as 'The Cabin,' on Westcotts Quay. Algernon Talmagepainted the Mackerel Shawl, which has been on display at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery since 1913. A woman appears to be trying on a new dress and shawl at what looks to be a dressmaker's store. The shawl is made of thin gauze fabric and may be embroidered with silver thread. Algernon Talmage was a frequent Royal Academy exhibitor who specialised in landscape painting. This was his first figure painting, and he was clearly drawn to the colour harmonies, a symphony of greys reminiscent of James McNeill Whistler's work from some 40 years previously.
