Van Gogh alugou um banheiro externo de quatro cômodos por 15 francos por mês e comprou móveis por 300 francos. Uma atitude estranha em relação ao dinheiro, que Van Gogh (famoso gênio pós-impressionista holandês) nunca teve: era perfeitamente possível alugar um quarto de hotel mobiliado por 5 francos. Mas a pequena herança ocasional permitiu-lhe realizar o sonho. E em maio de 1888, Van Gogh adquiriu um pequeno ateliê em Arles, no sul da França, de onde fugiu de Paris de artistas e críticos que não o entendiam. Móveis que Van Gogh comprou por 300 francos, que Theo lhe enviou como herança de seu tio. Querendo transmitir a imagem do conforto do lar, Van Gogh chegou a pensar em retratar uma mulher nua na cama ou colocar um berço ao lado dela, mas abandonou a ideia.
Os pesquisadores de Van Gogh acreditam que ele tenha tomado digitalis (remédio para epilepsia), o que faz com que o paciente tenha graves alterações na percepção das cores: toda a realidade circundante é pintada em um tom verde-amarelo. Objetos emparelhados (duas portas, duas almofadas, dois retratos, duas gravuras) eram um símbolo de paz, equilíbrio para Vincent, dissipou o sentimento de solidão.
Além disso, foram comprados dois leitos: Van Gogh esperava a chegada de Paul Gauguin, com ele planejava criar um ateliê de uma fraternidade de artistas.
No início estava tudo bem: os amigos escreviam juntos, iam a cafés e bordéis, mas logo começaram a entrar em conflito. As disputas chegaram à verdadeira histeria em que caiu Van Gogh, percebendo que o sonho da fraternidade havia se tornado uma utopia.
Os apostadores fechados, de acordo com Van Gogh, causaram-lhe uma sensação de segurança. Ele raramente os abria. A mesa com o lavatório simboliza para a artista um estilo de vida simples e saudável.
As pinturas nas paredes são principalmente obras do próprio Van Gogh. Na parede oposta - "Boulders and Oak" (Museu de Belas Artes de Houston). Dois retratos dos amigos de Van Gogh são visíveis na parede direita: o artista local Eugène Bosch e Paul-Eugene Millet - tenente do regimento Zouavsky. Existem duas gravuras japonesas abaixo deles. Van Gogh naquela época era muito apaixonado pela arte japonesa.
Observando com atenção, podemos notar linhas curvas na imagem. O crítico de arte Ronald Pikvans acredita que as paredes do antigo edifício foram realmente inclinadas e dobradas com a idade.
Espelho que Van Gogh comprou especificamente para pintar autorretratos. Poucos concordaram em posar para ele: os moradores consideravam suas obras como borrões, nas quais ficariam ridículas. O famoso "Auto-Retrato com Cachimbo" com orelha cortada, ele escreveu com a ajuda deste espelho particular.
O cobertor vermelho foi aquele em que o entorpecido Van Gogh será enrolado quando for encontrado na manhã de 23 de dezembro de 1888, com o lóbulo da orelha cortado. Este será o primeiro ataque psicopático do artista. Vincent será transferido para a clínica para doentes mentais e não poderá viver feliz no apartamento por ele fornecido.
