Van Gogh alquiló una letrina de cuatro habitaciones por 15 francos al mes y compró muebles en ella por 300 francos. Una actitud extraña hacia el dinero, que Van Gogh (el famoso genio postimpresionista holandés) nunca tuvo: era muy posible alquilar una habitación de hotel amueblada por 5 francos. Pero la pequeña herencia ocasional le permitió cumplir el sueño. Y en mayo de 1888, Van Gogh adquirió un pequeño taller en Arlés, en el sur de Francia, donde escapó de artistas y críticos parisinos que no lo entendían. Muebles que Van Gogh compró por 300 francos, que Theo le envió como herencia de su tío. Queriendo transmitir la imagen de la comodidad del hogar, Van Gogh incluso pensó en representar a una mujer desnuda en la cama o en poner una cuna al lado, pero dejó esta idea.
Los investigadores de Van Gogh creen que tomó digitalis (un remedio para la epilepsia), lo que provoca que el paciente tenga serios cambios en la percepción del color: toda la realidad circundante está pintada en un tono verde amarillento. Los objetos emparejados (dos puertas, dos almohadas, dos retratos, dos grabados) eran un símbolo de paz, equilibrio para Vincent, disipaban el sentimiento de soledad.
Además, se compraron dos camas: Van Gogh estaba esperando la llegada de Paul Gauguin, con él planeaba crear un taller de una fraternidad de artistas.
Al principio, todo iba bien: los amigos escribían juntos, iban a cafés y burdeles, pero pronto empezaron a entrar en conflicto. Las disputas llegaron a las verdaderas histerias en las que cayó Van Gogh, al darse cuenta de que el sueño de la fraternidad se había convertido en una utopía.
Los mejores cerrados, según Van Gogh, le producían una sensación de seguridad. Rara vez los abría. La mesa con el equipo de lavado simboliza para el artista un estilo de vida sencillo y saludable.
Las pinturas de las paredes son en su mayoría obras del propio Van Gogh. En la pared del fondo - "Boulders and Oak" (Museo de Bellas Artes de Houston). En la pared de la derecha se ven dos retratos de los amigos de Van Gogh: el artista local Eugène Bosch y Paul-Eugene Millet, lugarteniente del regimiento Zouavsky. Hay dos grabados japoneses debajo de ellos. Van Gogh en ese momento era un apasionado del arte japonés.
Observando atentamente, podemos notar líneas curvas en la imagen. El crítico de arte Ronald Pikvans cree que las paredes de la antigua dependencia realmente se inclinaron y se doblaron por la vejez.
Espejo que Van Gogh compró específicamente para pintar autorretratos. Pocos estuvieron de acuerdo en posar para él: los lugareños consideraban sus obras como embadurnaciones, en las que quedarían ridículas. El famoso "Autorretrato con pipa" con una oreja cortada, lo escribió con la ayuda de este espejo en particular.
La manta roja era la que envolvía al entumecido Van Gogh cuando lo encontraran la mañana del 23 de diciembre de 1888, con el lóbulo de la oreja cortado. Este será el primer ataque psicópata del artista. Vincent será trasladado a la clínica para enfermos mentales y no podrá vivir feliz en el apartamento que le proporcionó.
