Die „Mona Lisa“ oder „La Gioconda“ ist eines der berühmtesten und ikonischsten Porträts der Kunstgeschichte, das als „das bekannteste“, „das meistbesuchte“, „das meistgeschriebene“ gefeiert wurde. das am meisten besungene „Kunstwerk der Welt“. Im 16. Jahrhundert von Leonardo da Vinci gemalt, gelangte es in die Sammlungen des französischen Hofes, um schließlich Teil der im Louvre ausgestellten Werke zu sein.
Dieses Porträt stellt Lisa del Giocondo (geb. Gherardini) dar, die Ehefrau des Florentiner Kaufmanns Francesco di Bartolomeo del Giocondo und „Mona Lisa“ trägt den Spitznamen „La Gioconda“.
Zwischen 1503 und 1506 gemalt, wurde es von König Franz I. von Frankreich erworben und ist heute Eigentum der Französischen Republik.
Es scheint, dass der weltweite Ruhm dieser Leinwand nicht durch ihren künstlerischen Wert erklärt wird, sondern durch die Streitigkeiten und Geheimnisse, die das Bild begleiteten, sowie durch die besondere Wirkung auf den Menschen. Napoleon Bonaparte gefiel es einst so gut, dass er es vom Louvre in den Tuilerienpalast verlegte und in seinem Schlafzimmer aufhängte.
Italienisch bedeutet „ma donna“ „meine Dame“. Mona war also eine höfliche Anrede, ähnlich wie Ma’am, Madam oder My Lady auf Englisch erzählt Giorgio Vasari, ein bekannter Historiker des 16. Jahrhunderts, sprach respektvoll über das Porträt von Lisa Gerardini. Es gibt jedoch keine Gewissheit, dass es Mona Lisa Gioconda ist, die auf der Leinwand abgebildet ist. In dem Porträt, das Vasari beschreibt (obwohl er es selbst noch nie gesehen hatte), sind die Augenbrauen der Frau „an manchen Stellen dicker“ (Mona Lisa hat sie nicht) und „ihr Mund ist ein wenig offen“ (Mona Lisa lächelt, aber ihr Mund ist geschlossen).
Es stellt eine ziemlich große Bandbreite an Möglichkeiten für alle möglichen alternativen Versionen, Amateurspekulationen und die Infragestellung der Urheberschaft möglicher Kopien des Bildes und anderer Werke von Leonardo da Vinci dar. Vielleicht ist es wahr, dass Mona Lisa nur ein Selbstporträt von Leonardo im Frauenkleid ist. Experten wissen, dass der Maler sehr gerne bisexuelle Figuren schrieb, weshalb einige Kritiker die Ähnlichkeit zwischen den Proportionen des Gesichts auf dem Bild und der Selbstporträtskizze von Leonardo da Vinci sahen.
Theophile Gautier, der damals mit der Zusammenstellung des Louvre-Führers beschäftigt war, schätzte das Bild sehr und nannte es „eine entzückende Jokonda“: „Auf den Lippen dieser Frau spielt immer ein sinnliches Lächeln, als würde sie über ihre vielen spotten Bewunderer. Ihr heiteres Gesicht ist zuversichtlich, dass sie immer großartig und schön sein wird.
Leonardos Leinwand hat wirklich sehr kleine Formate, nämlich 53 mal 76 Zentimeter, und sieht insgesamt recht dunkel aus. In Wahrheit ist es nur schmutzig, denn wie bei den meisten Reproduktionen werden zu dieser Zeit die Originalfarben des Gemäldes „korrigiert“. Aber kein einziger Restaurator hat es gewagt, das Original zu „korrigieren“.
