William-Adolphe Bouguereau è stato un pittore accademico francese. Lavorando in stile neoclassico ha prodotto dipinti realistici che hanno lavorato interpretazioni moderne di soggetti classici, sia pagani che cristiani, con un'enfasi sul corpo umano femminile. Il mondo idealizzato delle sue tele ha dato vita a personaggi mitologici come dee, ninfe, bagnanti, pastorelle e madonne, in un modo che piaceva ai ricchi mecenati dell'epoca. Durante la sua vita Bouguereau godette di una notevole popolarità in Francia e negli Stati Uniti, ricevendo numerosi riconoscimenti e premi ufficiali per il suo lavoro. Tuttavia, il suo impegno per l'arte tradizionale come pittore da salotto per eccellenza della sua generazione ha causato il rifiuto del suo lavoro da parte dell'avanguardia impressionista.
In questo dipinto Bouguereau riproduce il modello iconografico della Vergine Maria con il bambino circondato da angeli. La Vergine è raffigurata con indosso la tipica veste azzurra, con il Bambino Gesù che riposa in grembo, mentre rappresenta il trono del Figlio di Dio. il loro sonno mentre suonano. Questa scena immobile ambientata in una radura allude probabilmente alla fuga della Sacra Famiglia in Egitto. Come l'ideale della bellezza femminile terrena è sempre stato ricercato nel volto e nella forma di Maria, così gli angeli incarnano l'armonia giovanile.
Bouguereau ha impiegato metodi tradizionali di elaborazione della pittura, inclusi studi dettagliati a matita e schizzi ad olio, e il suo metodo attento in una resa piacevole e accurata della forma umana. La sua rappresentazione della pelle, delle mani e dei piedi era particolarmente ammirata.
Pittore instancabile, ha spesso completato venti o più dipinti da cavalletto in un solo anno. Durante la sua vita, è noto per aver dipinto almeno 822 dipinti, molti dei quali sono andati perduti. All'inizio del ventesimo secolo, Bouguereau e la sua arte caddero in disgrazia presso il pubblico, in parte a causa del cambiamento dei gusti. Negli anni '80, un risveglio dell'interesse per la pittura di figura ha portato alla riscoperta della sua personalità e della sua opera.
