Aelbert Jacobsz Cuyp - Pintura a óleo
Aelbert Cuyp foi um pintor holandês do período barroco que é conhecido por suas paisagens pacíficas do interior holandês, caracterizado pelo uso poético da luz e da atmosfera. Nascido em Dordrecht em 1620 em uma família de artistas, ele foi treinado por seu pai Jan Gerritsz, ganhando experiência prática executando os fundos de suas pinturas de retratos. Foi também de seu pai que ele herdou seu amor pelos animais. Embora sua terra e paisagens marinhas fossem os gêneros nos quais alcançou considerável sucesso e influenciou outros pintores, Cuyp pintou alguns quadros de animais e pássaros e retratos ocasionais ou peças históricas.
Como ele fez em suas representações de cenas pastorais com vacas, nesta pintura Cuyp mostra a ninhada de galinhas e uma lista contra um céu brilhante. A sensação de serenidade rural é reforçada pelo baixo ponto de vista da imagem e tom melado, apenas interrompido pela ênfase vermelha nas cristas. São características que Cuyp adotou de artistas como Jan Both, que viajou pela Itália e cujo trabalho provavelmente veio a conhecer durante suas visitas a Utrecht. Cuyp transpôs a luz quente do Mediterrâneo para sua paisagem nativa holandesa. Suas fotos frequentemente incluem uma vista da paisagem ao redor de sua Dordrecht natal, embora ele também tenha se inspirado em suas incursões de desenho pela Holanda e o Rio Reno.
Durante a Idade de Ouro Holandesa, as circunstâncias políticas, econômicas, religiosas e sociais criaram um clima único e fecundo para as artes. Os comerciantes promoveriam um novo tipo de patrocínio para as artes e apoiariam um grande número de artistas que produziam pinturas para decoração doméstica. Cuyp assinou, mas não datou muitas de suas pinturas, e é difícil estabelecer uma cronologia de seu desenvolvimento estilístico. Sabe-se que até o início da década de 1640 ele pintava geralmente em pequena escala com um toque firme, mas fluente, e que em 1650 já havia desenvolvido seu estilo. Ele era conhecido como um homem religioso, ativo na Igreja Reformada Holandesa e ocupou vários cargos administrativos e eclesiásticos. Seu maior envolvimento nessas atividades e a falta de pressões financeiras como resultado de seu casamento em 1650 com Cornelia Bosman, uma viúva rica, podem ter sido o motivo para ele parar de pintar por volta de 1665.
