Aelbert Jacobsz Cuyp - Pintura al óleo
Aelbert Cuyp fue un pintor holandés del período barroco conocido por sus apacibles paisajes de la campiña holandesa, distinguido por el uso poético de la luz y la atmósfera. Nacido en Dordrecht en 1620 en una familia de artistas, fue entrenado por su padre Jan Gerritsz, adquiriendo experiencia práctica al ejecutar los fondos de sus retratos. También fue de su padre que heredó su amor por los animales. Aunque sus paisajes terrestres y marinos fueron los géneros en los que logró un éxito considerable e influyó en otros pintores, Cuyp pintó algunos cuadros de animales y aves y ocasionales retratos o piezas históricas.
Como lo hizo en sus representaciones de escenas pastorales con vacas, en esta pintura Cuyp siluetea la cría de pollos y una lista contra un cielo brillante. La sensación de serenidad rural se ve reforzada por el bajo punto de vista y el tono meloso de la imagen, solo interrumpido por el énfasis rojo en las crestas. Estos son rasgos que Cuyp adoptó de artistas como Jan Both, que había viajado por Italia y cuyo trabajo probablemente llegó a conocer durante sus visitas a Utrecht. Cuyp traspuso la cálida luz del Mediterráneo a su paisaje nativo holandés. Sus imágenes incluyen con frecuencia una vista del campo que rodea a su Dordrecht natal, aunque también se inspiró en sus dibujos de incursiones por Holanda y el río Rin.
Durante la Edad de Oro holandesa, las circunstancias políticas, económicas, religiosas y sociales crearon un clima único y fructífero para las artes. Los comerciantes fomentarían un nuevo tipo de mecenazgo de las artes y apoyarían a un gran número de artistas que producían pinturas para la decoración doméstica. Cuyp firmó, pero no fechó muchas de sus pinturas, y es difícil establecer una cronología de su desarrollo estilístico. Se sabe que hasta principios de la década de 1640 pintaba habitualmente a pequeña escala con un toque firme pero fluido y que hacia 1650 ya había desarrollado su estilo. Era conocido como un hombre religioso, activo en la Iglesia Reformada Holandesa, y sirvió en varios puestos administrativos y eclesiásticos. Su mayor participación en estas actividades y la falta de presiones económicas como resultado de su matrimonio en 1650 con Cornelia Bosman, una viuda adinerada, podrían haber sido la causa de que dejara de pintar alrededor de 1665.
