Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) - Spanischer Maler, Bildhauer, Grafiker, Theaterkünstler, Keramiker und Designer. Er wurde in Spanien geboren, lebte aber die meiste Zeit seines Lebens in Frankreich, weshalb er oft als französischer Künstler bezeichnet wird. Der Begründer des Kubismus, bei dem der dreidimensionale Körper auf originelle Weise als eine Reihe von kombinierten Plänen gezeichnet wurde. Er rief viele Nachahmer ins Leben und beeinflusste die Entwicklung der bildenden Kunst im 20. Jahrhundert. Picasso hatte nicht nur für sein Werk, sondern auch für zahlreiche Liebesaffären einen gewissen Ruhm.
Im Mai 2015 wurde bei Christie's Auktion in New York ein neuer Weltrekord aufgestellt – nur 11 Minuten nach Eröffnung der Auktion mit einem Startpreis von 100 Millionen US-Dollar wurde Pablo Picassos Gemälde „Die Frauen von Algier (Version O)“ verkauft für 179.365.000 US-Dollar. Derzeit gilt es als das teuerste Gemälde der Welt, das auf einer Auktion verkauft wird. Wie die berühmte Leinwand entstand und wer den Künstler dazu inspirierte, ist ein nicht weniger interessantes Objekt der Aufmerksamkeit als der Käufer, der das Gemälde für sagenhaftes Geld erworben hat und anonym bleiben wollte. "Algerische Frauen" ist eine Serie von zwei Lithographien und 15 Gemälden, entstanden 1954–1955. Sie wurden durch einen Namen vereint und alphabetisch mit Buchstaben von „A“ bis „O“ bezeichnet. Eine Reihe von Werken inspirierte 1834 das gleichnamige Gemälde von Eugene Delacroix, das Konkubinen im östlichen Harem darstellt. Auf einer Reise durch Nordafrika besuchte Delacroix den Sultan in Algerien. Dort sah er zufällig Konkubinen im Harem, was ihn dazu inspirierte, die Leinwand zu schaffen. Dieses Werk war ein Meilenstein in der Geschichte der bildenden Kunst, Matisse, Renoir, Picasso und Vrubel waren begeistert.
Das Gemälde von Eugene Delacroix war jedoch nicht die einzige Inspirationsquelle für Picasso. Für die Bilder der Serie „The Women of Algiers“ posierte für ihn die Ehefrau des Künstlers, Jacqueline Rock, die der Frau in einer leichten Bluse von Delacroix auffallend ähnlich sah. Picasso hat immer ihre Ähnlichkeit mit Haremsschönheiten betont und sie oft in orientalischer Kleidung dargestellt.
Laut Experten ist die 15. Fassung von "Die Frauen von Algier" das bedeutendste Werk Picassos, das sich in einer Privatsammlung befindet, "die Krönung der Reihe und ein ganz herausragendes Werk". Dieses Werk des spanischen Künstlers war Teil der Privatsammlung von Victor und Sally Ganz, die es 1956 für 212,5 Tausend Dollar von Picasso kauften. Es wurde 1977 nach dem Tod der Ehegatten verkauft. Und 2015 wurde dieses Werk zum teuersten Kunstwerk der Welt, das auf einer Auktion verkauft wurde. Die Gemälde von Pablo Picasso gehörten schon immer zu den teuersten der Welt – zum Beispiel waren seine beiden Werke 2009 unter den Top 10 der teuersten Gemälde.
