Pionero del arte abstracto y eminente teórico de la estética, Wassily Kandinsky (n. 1866, Moscú; m. 1944, Neuilly-sur-Seine, Francia) abrió nuevos caminos en la pintura en las primeras décadas del siglo XX. Su tratado seminal Sobre lo espiritual en el arte, publicado en Munich en 1911, establece su programa para desarrollar un arte independiente de las observaciones del mundo exterior. Kandinsky se esforzó por utilizar la abstracción para darle a la pintura la libertad de la naturaleza que admiraba en la música. Su descubrimiento de un nuevo tema no objetivo lo ocupó durante toda su vida. Sin embargo, la carrera artística de Kandinsky se inició tres décadas antes de desarrollar esta teoría revolucionaria. Sus primeras obras corresponden al movimiento del expresionismo y fueron producidas principalmente en Munich después de que se asociara con los principales grupos de vanguardia de la ciudad, como Der Blaue Reiter, en 1896.
Compuesto por capas densamente trabajadas de pigmentos verdes, blancos y terrosos, y trazos de azul, "Kochel - Waterfall I" es un ejemplo importante de los primeros paisajes de Wassily Kandinsky. Kandinsky se inspiró en gran medida en el espectacular terreno que rodeaba a Kochel, una ciudad bávara al sur de Múnich ubicada cerca de un gran lago al pie de los Alpes, y con frecuencia pintó la naturaleza de la zona. En esta pintura, se representa la cascada de Lainbach, y la repetiría en el verano de 1902 cuando llevó a su clase de alumnos a Kochel en su calidad de profesor en la escuela Phalanx. En esa segunda versión, su utilización de colores fuertes funcionaría para sugerir formas y formas puras, flotando cerca de la frontera de la abstracción.
Si bien la pintura actual puede parecer muy alejada de las últimas obras abstractas del artista, Kandinsky vio su progresión como bastante lógica. No quiso dar la impresión de que su arte constituye una ruptura radical con la tradición, más bien defendió la idea de que todo lo nuevo en el arte debe surgir de lo que sucedió antes. Kandinsky más tarde recordó la importancia de estos primeros estudios del paisaje en el desarrollo de sus principios creativos, y señaló que esta primera fase de su carrera estuvo dominada por dos temas primordiales: “1. Amor por la naturaleza. 2. Movimientos indefinidos del impulso de crear. Este amor por la naturaleza consistió principalmente en pura alegría en el entusiasmo por el elemento del color. A menudo estaba tan fuertemente poseído por un parche de azul perfumado y que sonaba fuerte en la sombra de un arbusto que pintaría todo un paisaje simplemente para arreglar este parche ... Fue a partir de estos ejercicios que mi habilidad posterior se desarrolló, así como mi forma de pintar paisajes sonoros ”.
