William Turner gilt normalerweise als Begründer der modernen Malerei, der mit seinem Interesse an direkter Beobachtung, Lichteffekten und der Erfassung von Aspekten des zeitgenössischen Lebens den Impressionismus und sogar die abstrakte Kunst vorwegnahm. Seit seiner Einschreibung an der Royal Academy of Art in jungen Jahren widmete er sich der Landschaftsmalerei und ließ sich von niederländischen und französischen Malern des 17. Seine ersten bedeutenden Aufträge waren Architektur- und Topographie-Aquarelle, ein Medium, in dem er intensiv arbeitete, obwohl zu dieser Zeit die Ölfarbe am meisten geschätzt wurde. Turner stellte ab 1790 an der Royal Academy aus und schickte 1796 sein erstes Öl als Zeichen seiner größeren Ambitionen als Maler. In den folgenden Jahren variierten seine Werke in Geschichte, Literatur und Mythos und forderten die Stile der Alten Meister heraus. Schließlich eröffnete er seine private Galerie in London, wo er frei experimentieren und seine einzigartige Vision fördern konnte. Seine verschiedenen Tourneen durch Europa führten zu einer Fülle von Material, das von vor Ort gezeichneten Bleistiftskizzen bis hin zu farbigen Studien reichte, die zur Entwicklung seines Stils beitrugen.
Die gesellschaftlichen Veränderungen, die die englische Industrielle Revolution mit sich brachte, faszinierten und inspirierten Turner, aber nicht weniger als die Erhabenheit der Natur. Keelmen Heaving in Coals by Moonlight fängt diese beiden Themen ein und stellt sie einander gegenüber. Dargestellt ist der Fluss Tyne, der durch Shields fließt, eine Stadt flussabwärts von Newcastle, die im 19. Jahrhundert ein großer Kohlelieferant für London und die Herstellung von Glas und Eisen war. Die flammenden Schornsteine der Industrie veränderten die Aussicht auf Meer und Land von England, und die von ihnen ausgestoßenen Schadstoffe haben möglicherweise zur gebrochenen und schimmernden Qualität des Lichts beigetragen, das Turner in diesem Gemälde einfängt. Das schillernde, nächtliche Leuchten des Mondes und ein Gefühl der Ruhe prägen die Atmosphäre des Bildes. Bojen und Tretboote schwimmen leise im Wasser, im Gegensatz zu den Arbeitern, die die im Hafen verankerten Boote unter brennenden Kohlenbecken und einer Rußwolke an den Rändern des Gemäldes warten, was auf eine noch weitläufigere Landschaft einer Industrie hindeutet, die sich außerhalb des Blickfeldes erstreckt den Anforderungen einer wachsenden Wirtschaft gerecht zu werden.
Obwohl Turner versuchte, den Akt des Malens zu verändern, suchte er auch aktiv die Anerkennung seiner Kollegen und des Publikums, was er letztendlich genoss, da sein lockerer und romantischer Stil mit der britischen Ablehnung der hochglanzpolierten, klassizisierten französischen Malstile zusammenfiel dominierten den europäischen Geschmack im vorigen Jahrhundert. 1802 wurde er zum vollen Royal Academician 1802 ernannt und war damit der jüngste Künstler, der so geehrt wurde.
