Wassily Kandinsky (geb. 1866, Moskau; gest. 1944, Neuilly-sur-Seine, Frankreich), Pionier der abstrakten Kunst und bedeutender Ästhetiktheoretiker, betrat in den ersten Jahrzehnten des 20. Jahrhunderts neue Wege in der Malerei. Seine 1911 in München erschienene bahnbrechende Abhandlung Über das Geistige in der Kunst legt sein Programm für die Entwicklung einer von der Beobachtung der Außenwelt unabhängigen Kunst dar. Kandinsky bemühte sich, der Malerei durch Abstraktion die Freiheit von der Natur zu verleihen, die er in der Musik bewunderte. Die Entdeckung eines neuen, ungegenständlichen Stoffes beschäftigte ihn zeitlebens. Dennoch hatte Kandinskys künstlerische Karriere drei Jahrzehnte vor der Entwicklung dieser revolutionären Theorie begonnen. Seine frühen Werke entsprechen der Bewegung des Expressionismus und entstanden meist in München, nachdem er sich 1896 mit den führenden Avantgardegruppen der Stadt wie dem Blauen Reiter verbunden hatte.
Bestehend aus Strichen aus grüner, blauer, weißer und erdiger Ölmalerei, dick aufgetragen mit einem Spachtel direkt auf den Boden. „Kochel – Wasserfall II“ ist ein wichtiges Beispiel für Wassily Kandinskys frühe Landschaften. Kandinsky ließ sich stark von der dramatischen Landschaft rund um Kochel inspirieren, einer bayerischen Stadt südlich von München in der Nähe eines großen Sees am Fuße der Alpen und malte häufig die Natur der Gegend. Diese zweite Version des Lainbach-Wasserfalls stellte er im Sommer 1902 dar, während er als Lehrer an der Phalanx-Schule seine Schülerklasse nach Kochel führte. Wie in den anderen Ölstudien, die er derzeit produzierte, sollte seine Verwendung kräftiger Farben dazu dienen, reine Form und Form zu suggerieren, die nahe der Grenze zur Abstraktion schweben. In den Worten des Künstlers: „Im Studium habe ich mich gehen lassen. Ich dachte wenig an Häuser und Bäume, zeichnete mit meinem Spachtel farbige Linien und Kleckse auf die Leinwand und ließ sie so kraftvoll singen, wie ich es konnte.“ Später erinnerte er sich daran, wie sich aus diesen Übungen seine klingenden Landschaften entwickelten.
Der Sommer 1902 hatte für Kandinsky eine besondere Bedeutung. Während dieses Aufenthaltes in Kochel vertiefte sich seine Beziehung zu einer seiner Studenten, Gabriele Münter. Nur ein Jahr später, 1903, verlobte sich das Paar, was jedoch geheim gehalten wurde, da Kandinsky zu dieser Zeit noch verheiratet war. Diese starken Emotionen könnten seine Arbeit durchdrungen haben.
