Pioneiro da arte abstrata e eminente teórico da estética, Wassily Kandinsky (nascido em 1866, Moscou; m. 1944, Neuilly-sur-Seine, França) inovou na pintura nas primeiras décadas do século XX. Seu tratado seminal Sobre o espiritual na arte, publicado em Munique em 1911, apresenta seu programa para desenvolver uma arte independente das observações do mundo externo. Kandinsky se esforçou para usar a abstração para dar à pintura a liberdade da natureza que ele admirava na música. A descoberta de um novo assunto não objetivo o ocupou por toda a vida. No entanto, a carreira artística de Kandinsky foi lançada três décadas antes de desenvolver esta teoria revolucionária. Seus primeiros trabalhos correspondem ao movimento do expressionismo e foram produzidos principalmente em Munique, depois que ele formou associações com os principais grupos de vanguarda da cidade, como Der Blaue Reiter, em 1896.
Composto por pinceladas de pintura a óleo verde, azul, branca e terrosa, aplicadas espessa com espátula diretamente no solo. “Kochel - Cachoeira II” é um exemplo importante das primeiras paisagens de Wassily Kandinsky. Kandinsky foi muito inspirado pelo terreno dramático ao redor de Kochel, uma cidade bávara ao sul de Munique, situada perto de um grande lago no sopé dos Alpes, e frequentemente pintava a natureza da área. Ele retratou esta segunda versão da cachoeira Lainbach no verão de 1902, enquanto levava sua classe de alunos para Kochel na qualidade de professor na escola Phalanx. Como nos outros estudos de óleo que produziu no momento, sua utilização de cores fortes funcionaria para sugerir forma e forma puras, pairando perto da fronteira da abstração. Nas palavras do artista: 'Nos meus estudos, eu me deixo levar. Eu não tinha pensado muito nas casas e árvores, desenhando linhas coloridas e manchas na tela com minha espátula, fazendo-as cantar tão poderosamente quanto eu sabia '. Mais tarde, ele se lembraria de como suas paisagens sonantes se desenvolveriam a partir desses exercícios.
O verão de 1902 teve um significado especial para Kandinsky. Foi durante essa estada em Kochel que seu relacionamento com um de seus alunos, Gabriele Münter, se aprofundou. Apenas um ano depois, em 1903, o casal ficou noivo, embora isso fosse mantido em segredo porque Kandinsky ainda era casado na época. Essas fortes emoções podem ter permeado seu trabalho.
