Los años veinte del siglo XX fueron el apogeo y la máxima actividad creativa del espléndido artista español Picasso. El triple retrato de "músicos", que ejemplifica el estilo cubista sintético, es una de las pinturas más famosas de este período. El maestro quedó fascinado por los personajes de la comedia popular italiana, las famosas máscaras "del Arte".
Tres imágenes, tres personajes, tres componentes de un único organismo creativo. Arlequín divertido e imprudente, Pierrot lírico y reflexivo, Monje astuto y de dos caras: los tres son personajes favoritos de la comedia popular. En el escenario siempre son rivales, mientras que en la imagen son amigos, músicos que crean una "melodía" común de la obra, su sonido artístico.
Aquí quedan inmortalizados los grandes amigos de Pablo: el poeta y crítico Guillaume Apollinaire (Pierrot) y el poeta Max Jacob (monje), que se retiró del mundo, convirtiéndose en monje. El propio artista se presentó a sí mismo a imagen de Arlequín. Las máscaras no ocultan la apariencia de los personajes, simbolizan su falta de revelación al público, su pertenencia al futuro más que al presente.
"Tres Músicos" puede considerarse como un monumento a sus amigos más cercanos y la juventud bohemia, adiós a lo que no volverá. La textura inusual, las imágenes asombrosas crean una dinámica única, y parece que puedes captar los sonidos del jazz sinuoso que fluye del lienzo.
La estética del cuadro es compleja y ambigua. Fue difícil para el maestro adherirse a las tradiciones, creando imágenes de tres, personalidades no tradicionales. Por tanto, el artista elige una técnica ambigua de combinaciones de manchas de color, rompe la perspectiva, concentra la atención del espectador en la consonancia interna de los personajes, con una diferencia externa absoluta.
La técnica de ejecución es sorprendente: se representan tres figuras diferentes en el mismo espacio, y es difícil deshacerse de la impresión de que no solo se crean por separado, sino que también parecen estar pegadas al lienzo. Otra característica sorprendente es que las figuras, realizadas al estilo del cubismo, no pierden volumen.
Luego de la presentación de la obra a la audiencia, las imágenes fueron elogiadas con elogios. Así, Maurice Raynal argumentó que la obra de Picasso es "una obra maestra de inteligencia y gracia", y también la definió como una especie de resultado exitoso de todas las búsquedas artísticas en el marco del cubismo, demostrando a la perfección toda la fuerza, la amplia gama de rostros. y revelaciones de este estilo.
El cuadro se pintó muy rápidamente, en solo tres días, mientras estaba de vacaciones en Fontainebleau. Los historiadores del arte creen que la obra fue una especie de despedida final de Apollinaire, que murió poco antes de esto. El artista inmortalizó la amistad de tres vanguardistas, dos poetas y un artista, unidos por una búsqueda común de nuevas formas en el arte.
Hay dos versiones de "Three Musicians". Una obra más completa se encuentra ahora en el Museo de Arte Moderno de Nueva York, la otra se encuentra en el Museo de Arte de Filadelfia.
