Paul Cézanne war einer der bedeutendsten postimpressionistischen Maler des 19. Jahrhunderts. Sein Werk legte den Grundstein für den Übergang vom Impressionismus zu den Avantgarde-Bewegungen des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts wie Kubismus, Expressionismus und abstrakter Malerei. Bekannt für seine strahlenden Landschaften, intensiven Porträts und komplexen Stillleben, bestechen seine reifen Werke durch ihre lebendige Palette, sensiblen Pinselstriche und wirbelnden, instabilen Kompositionen voller Ungestüm und Kraft.
Dieses Gemälde zeigt einen Blick auf das Ufer der Seine in Paris, wo ein Schwimmkran hoch über den Bögen des Pont National thront. Interessanterweise ist das Werk eine Interpretation Cézannes nach einem impressionistischen Gemälde seines Freundes Armand Guillaumin. Ein Vergleich mit früheren Werken zeigt, wie Cézanne seinen Stil systematisch zu entwickeln begann, um sich deutlich von dem der Impressionisten abzugrenzen. Im Gegensatz zu ihrer spontanen Pinselführung zeigt sich die kontrollierte und organisierte Pinselführung von Cézanne besonders in der Konfiguration der Wolken mit strukturierten diagonalen Pinselstrichen, im Gegensatz zu den ephemeren Atmosphären, die die Künstler aus dem vorherigen Satz geschaffen haben. Eine kompositorische und stilistische Trennung wird mit dem unteren Bildbereich hergestellt, in dem die Pinselstriche horizontal angeordnet sind und die Charaktere durch die Verwendung von Farbflächen progressiv abstrakt wiedergegeben werden.
In Aix-en-Provence geboren, kam Cézanne in Paris mit Camille Pissarro in Kontakt, mit dem er in Auvers zusammenarbeitete und unter dessen Einfluss er begann, dunkle Farben aufzugeben und hellere Leinwände zu schaffen. Zu der Zeit, als er dieses Gemälde schuf, bewegte sich Cézanne zwischen Paris und der Provence und stellte in der ersten (1874) und dritten impressionistischen Ausstellung (1877) aus. 1875 erregte er die Aufmerksamkeit des Sammlers Victor Chocquet, dessen Aufträge ihn finanziell entlasteten. Seine Werke wurden jedoch mehrfach vom offiziellen Salon in Paris abgelehnt und von Kunstkritikern verspottet, während er von jüngeren Künstlern, die sein Atelier in Aix besuchten, als Meister angesehen wurde. Die Retrospektive Cézannes von 1907 nach seinem Tod im Salon d'Automne beeinflusste die Richtung der modernen Kunst in Paris stark. Sein Interesse an der Vereinfachung natürlich vorkommender Formen auf ihr geometrisches Wesentliches – den Zylinder, die Kugel, den Kegel – inspirierte Picasso, Braque und andere zu Experimenten mit dem Zerbrechen der Form, das zum Kubismus führen sollte.
