Paul Cézanne foi um dos mais importantes pintores pós-impressionistas do século XIX. Seu trabalho lançou as bases da transição do impressionismo para os movimentos de vanguarda do início do século 20, como o cubismo, o expressionismo e a pintura abstrata. Famoso por suas paisagens radiantes, retratos intensos e naturezas mortas complexas, seus trabalhos maduros são impressionantes por sua paleta vívida, pinceladas sensíveis e composições instáveis e ondulantes cheias de impetuosidade e vigor.
Esta pintura mostra uma vista da margem do rio Sena em Paris, onde um guindaste flutuante se eleva acima dos arcos do Pont National. Curiosamente, a obra é uma interpretação que Cézanne fez após uma pintura impressionista de seu amigo Armand Guillaumin. Uma comparação com trabalhos anteriores ilustra como Cézanne estava começando a desenvolver sistematicamente seu estilo para estabelecer uma diferença clara em relação ao dos impressionistas. Em contraposição à sua pincelada espontânea, o uso da pincelada controlada e organizada por Cézanne é particularmente evidente na configuração das nuvens com pinceladas diagonais estruturadas, em oposição às atmosferas efêmeras criadas pelos artistas do movimento anterior. Uma separação composicional e estilística é estabelecida com a área inferior da pintura, onde as pinceladas são organizadas horizontalmente e os personagens são representados de forma progressivamente abstrata usando planos de cor.
Nascido em Aix-en-Provence, Cézanne entraria em contato em Paris com Camille Pissarro, com quem trabalharia em Auvers e sob cuja influência começou a abandonar as cores escuras para criar telas mais brilhantes. Na época em que criou esta pintura, Cézanne estava se movendo entre Paris e Provença e exibindo na primeira (1874) e na terceira mostra impressionista (1877). Em 1875, atraiu a atenção do colecionador Victor Chocquet, cujas encomendas lhe proporcionaram algum alívio financeiro. Porém, suas obras foram rejeitadas inúmeras vezes pelo Salão oficial de Paris e ridicularizadas pelos críticos de arte, enquanto ele era considerado um mestre por artistas mais jovens que visitavam seu estúdio em Aix. A retrospectiva de Cézanne de 1907 após sua morte no Salon d'Automne afetou muito a direção da arte moderna em Paris. Seu interesse na simplificação de formas que ocorrem naturalmente em seus fundamentos geométricos - o cilindro, a esfera, o cone - inspirou Picasso, Braque e outros a experimentar a fratura da forma que levaria ao cubismo.
