L'aura artistica di Amedeo Modigliani è spesso permeata dalla sua posa di un bohémien sgargiante nella scena d'avanguardia parigina del primo Novecento. Si dice che il suo comportamento irregolare e ubriaco sia stato usato dall'artista per mascherare la sua meningite tubercolare, che fu la causa della sua morte all'età di 35 anni. Sorprendentemente, una vita così tormentata potrebbe produrre un corpo di lavoro piuttosto sereno. Le sue interpretazioni stilizzate di donne languide e malinconiche sono le sue opere d'arte più note.
Questo ritratto di una donna con una camicetta rosa fu dipinto pochi mesi prima della morte di Modigliani e acquistato nel 1923 da Jacques Doucet. Quando fu esposto a Parigi nel 1929, il dipinto fu accolto con ottime recensioni, descritto come abbagliante e come una delle opere d'arte più belle del maestro.
A causa del suo carattere impulsivo, Modigliani non era incline a produrre ritratti su commissione, quindi i suoi soggetti erano spesso amici e conoscenti. La posa della modella, con le mani incrociate sulle ginocchia, ricorda alcuni ritratti di Cézanne, per il cui lavoro Modigliani professava una profonda ammirazione. La rappresentazione realistica della camera da letto, con un letto in ferro e un dipinto appeso alla parete, presente anche nella “Giovane donna del popolo” (1918), è quanto mai sorprendente in quanto l'artista privilegiava solitamente decorazioni più astratte. Tuttavia, il dipinto deve il suo successo allo splendore della camicetta della modella, che spicca tra i colori tenui impiegati nel resto della composizione.
Modigliani esalta la dissimmetria del volto della donna, creando una stimolante dimensione plastica attraverso l'accentuazione dei suoi bordi. Questo è un prodotto della sua pratica scultorea, che ha dovuto abbandonare poiché le grandi teste di pietra altamente stilizzate che produceva, con nasi incredibilmente lunghi e piccole bocche arricciate, non sono riuscite ad attirare acquirenti, costringendolo a dedicarsi alla pittura e al disegno. I suoi disegni sono stati molto influenzati dalla serenità delle tombe del primo Rinascimento e dall'arte tribale misticamente intrisa, in particolare le maschere africane.
Gli occhi del modello sono ben disegnati, distruggendo uno dei miti che circondano la sua arte, poiché si dice spesso che non dipingerebbe le pupille dei posti a meno che non riesca a catturare la loro anima. L'artista di solito dipingeva a memoria e la rapida pennellata, il viso allungato e gli occhi vuoti sarebbero diventati il suo marchio di fabbrica. La diversità nelle trame e nelle pennellate impiegate da Modigliani in questo dipinto lo rende il più saporito.
