Durante a maior parte de sua vida criativa, Max Bechmann (artista expressionista alemão) pintou quadros sobre temas sociais, históricos e militares. O marco é a pintura "A Noite", que retrata o ataque de bandidos à família. Os rostos terríveis das pessoas e suas poses não naturais fazem o público estremecer de horror. É uma técnica muito interessante na qual o trabalho foi escrito e a paleta de cores. Estas são principalmente tintas brancas e pretas, devido ao seu contraste é criada uma sensação de nitidez e aspereza. Em estilo, a imagem lembra um pouco Cézanne - as mesmas linhas verticais, uma maneira semelhante de escrever. Os críticos costumam comparar “The Night” com “Transnonain Street, 1834” de Honore Daumier e “Guernica” de Pablo Picasso.
Três homens aparecem para invadir uma pequena sala apertada, onde aterrorizam a cena. À esquerda, um homem é pendurado por um dos intrusos e seu braço é torcido por outro. Uma mulher, aparentemente esposa do homem, é amarrada após ter sido estuprada. À direita, a criança está prestes a ser levada por um dos intrusos ․
O assunto é instantaneamente caótico, amplificado pelo uso de cores e formas pelo artista. A pintura é limitada apenas aos tons de marrom e tons de vermelho vibrantes. Além disso, Beckmann domina uma forma comumente associada aos artistas fauvismos do início do século 20, como Henri Matisse: a pintura é composicionalmente plana e afetada, sem implementações de profundidade. Por exemplo, embora a mulher apareça na frente da peça, ela está presa à entrada dos fundos da sala. O artista desviou-se das pinturas convencionais de vanguarda e não representativas, como o cubismo e o dadaísmo. As interrupções esporádicas de vermelho vibrante e a angularidade intrusiva da pintura servem para chocar o espectador e animar a cena com caos e energia.
Uma cena verossímil e nojenta do triunfo do mal é representada aqui. Esta é novamente uma previsão de acontecimentos históricos, que serão os anti-heróis de quem "gosta de cerveja com música" canta "Alemanha, Alemanha acima de tudo". E embora a imagem seja escrita sobre o tema de um incidente real - os ataques de gangsters à família, ela cria associações de um amplo plano social e histórico. Não é à toa que esta obra foi criada em 1918-1919 quando a Alemanha entra em um período muito especial de sua história. A pintura encontra-se atualmente na Coleção de Arte da Renânia-Vestfália, em Düsseldorf.
As pinturas de vanguarda incomuns e elegantes do artista Max Beckman (1884 a 1950) são muito relevantes em nossa época. Brilhantes, com contornos nítidos, um pouco caricatos, encaixam-se perfeitamente na moda do século XXI. Mas na época em que Beckman trabalhava, sua arte era chamada de “degenerativa”, o que era muito ofensivo. Arte degenerada é um termo do vocabulário nazista. Com este termo, a arte de Bechmann foi definida. Sua arte era perigosa para a raça ariana pura. Anti-alemão, anti-clássico, vanguardista e judeu-bolchevique em uma garrafa. O próprio Hitler criticou essa arte em seu livro.
