Das Gemälde „Ball at Moulin de la Galette“ („Tanz in Moulin de la Galette“ 1876), eines der berühmtesten Werke des französischen Künstlers Pierre-Auguste Renoir, ist eine Genreszene, die in die Luft geschrieben ist. Moulin de la Galette is eine preiswerte Taverne in Montmartre, in der sich Studenten und berufstätige Jugendliche aus Paris versammelten, an die sich ein geräumiger Freilufttanzsaal anschloss, in dem oft Tanzpartys stattfanden.
Der Ball ist in Renoirs Gemälde in vollem Gange, er brach bereits auf dieser Plattform vor dem Wirtshaus aus. Und wie sonst bei schönem Sommerwetter im Hof? Im Kunstwerk bewegt sich alles: Manche reden lebhaft, andere tanzen versunken. Sonnenflecken wandern durch die festliche Menge und färben sie in verschiedenen Lichtschattierungen. Die Farbpalette des Gemäldes setzt sich, wie in seinen vielen anderen Werken, aus freien Strichen zusammen, die der Künstler einzeln nacheinander auf die Leinwand setzt. "Ball" ist eine Hymne der Jugend und Freude, gesungen vom Künstler in der Sprache der Farben.
Viele Künstler haben diese „Moulin“ und das Restaurant dazu geschrieben. Van Gogh zum Beispiel widmet dem „Moulin“ eine ganze Reihe: Die Pariser Wohnung seines Bruders Theo befand sich in Montmartre, neben dem Moulin de la Galette. Auch Toulouse-Lautrec und Picasso kamen an der „Moulin“ nicht vorbei.
Der Künstler fertigte sogar eine kleine Kopie davon an – und Sotheby’s verkaufte es 1990 bei der Auktion in New York für 78 Millionen Dollar. Und sogar eine Skizze zu diesem Bild ist heute ein Museumskauf und ein dänisches Wahrzeichen (die Skizze wird in einem Museum in einem Vorort von Kopenhagen aufbewahrt).
1876 mietete Renoir ein Atelier mit Garten in Montmartre, das sich in der Nähe der Moulin de la Galette befand, ein Restaurant mit Tanzsaal im oberen Teil des Montmartre, das seinen Namen von der ganz in der Nähe liegenden Mühle erhielt. Modelle für Renoir wurden seine Freunde. So sind ein Mädchen in einem dunkelblauen Kleid und ein daneben sitzendes Mädchen in einem rosa-blau gestreiften Kleid im Vordergrund die Schwestern Jeanne und Estelle, die jeden Sonntag ins Café gingen und für andere Arbeiten für Renoir posierten. Der Mann, der ihnen gegenüber sitzt, ist ein enger Freund und Künstler Pierre Franc-Lamy. In den beiden gut gekleideten Männern rechts erkennt man den Künstler Norbert Genette und den Journalisten Georges Riviera, und die junge Tänzerin links wurde von Margaret Legrand gemalt, einem von Renoirs Lieblingsmodellen, die kurz nach dem Schreiben des Bildes starb von Typhus.
Ab 1879 befand sich das Meisterwerk in der Sammlung des französischen Kaufmanns und Malers Gustave Caibotte und ging nach seinem Tod 1894 als Erbschaftssteuer in den Besitz des Staates über. Bereits 1896 wurde das Werk in das Museum im Luxemburger Garten überführt. Seit 1929 befand sich das Bild in der Sammlung des Louvre, von wo es 1986 in das Orsay Museum überführt wurde, wo es bis heute ausgestellt ist.
