He was born in Dordrecht and received his artistic education in Amsterdam from Jan Maurits Quinkhard after having studied with several minor masters. He is known for his portraits, such as 'Portrait of Ludolf Backhuysen II, Painter, in the Uniform of the Dragoons' (1748).
