Early Life and Career

Ezra Ames (May 5, 1768 – February 23, 1836) was a prominent portrait painter in Albany, New York, during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born in Framingham, Massachusetts, Ames moved to Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1790, and married Zipporah Wood in 1794.

Artistic Style and Notable Works

Ames' work had a popular appeal, characterized by his sure and fluent brushwork, keen characterization, and pure, fresh coloring. His portrait of Governor George Clinton, exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy in 1812, won him wide notice. Many of his works are scattered throughout the middle states, in private hands.

Notable Commissions and Associations

* Painted over 700 portraits, including prominent people such as Alexander Hamilton * Served as chairman of the Fine Arts Committee of the Society for the Promotion of Useful Arts in 1805 * President of the Mechanics' and Farmers' Bank of Albany * Active freemason, receiving numerous commissions from fellow masons

Legacy and Later Life

Ames retired comfortably on his savings, built up during his prolific career (primarily between 1800 and 1820). He became known unofficially as the official New York State portrait painter. Ames died in 1836 and is buried at the Albany Rural Cemetery (Lot 1 Section 59). He was posthumously elected an honorary member of the American Academy of Fine Arts in New York City.
