"Lady of the lorgnon"

Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro (i) - Oil Painting (i) - 27 x 22 cm - 1895 - (Machado de Castro National Museum (Coimbra, Portugal))

Oil painting on wood, depicting a female figure, half-body, inserted in a greenish background, consisting essentially of broad spots of greens that merge with browns, abruptly sectioned by a blue-gray tone in the upper left corner. This contrast of colour, bringing a cold tone into earthy secondary colours, points the attention of the observer to the hat, where the same tone is used in the flower that decorates it. Simultaneously it confers mystery, drama and an introspection that prepare the observer for the psychological portrait that this painting contains. The woman, turned slightly three quarters to the left, wears a high-top hat, light brown, with a brim girded by a brown ribbon, topped by the blue flower and leaves (green). Her hair is tight, possibly at the back of her nape. She wears a multi-colored patchwork jacket, highlighting the red that contrasts strongly with the rest of the colour palette, focusing the attention of the observer on the character\

Early Life and Training

Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro, a renowned Portuguese Realist painter, was born on November 21, 1857, in Cacilhas, Portugal. He was the son of romantic painter Manuel Maria Bordalo Pinheiro and the younger brother of caricaturist Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro. Columbano's artistic journey began under the guidance of his father, as well as Miguel Ângelo Lupi and sculptor Simões de Almeida.

Artistic Career

In 1881, with the financial support of Countess of Edla, second wife of King Ferdinand II, Columbano pursued his studies in France. There, he was influenced by French naturalist, realist, and impressionist painters like Courbet, Manet, and Degas, without losing his distinctive style, often characterized as gloomy and intimist.
  • Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro co-founded the 'Grupo do Leão', a gathering of artists, writers, and intellectuals in Lisbon's downtown restaurant 'Leão de Ouro' (The Golden Lion), to discuss aesthetic issues and promote Naturalism against academic art.
  • He painted portraits of prominent Portuguese society and culture figures, such as José Maria de Eça de Queiroz, Teófilo Braga, Raul Brandão, showcasing his psychological accuracy in defining the personalities depicted.
  • His most famous portrait was that of poet Antero de Quental in 1889, which seemed to anticipate Antero's suicide.

Later Life and Legacy

As a well-known Republican, after the Republic proclamation in 1910, Columbano was invited to design the flag of the new regime.
