"The Son of Man"

Rene Magritte - Oil On Canvas - 116 x 89 cm - 1964

The Son of Man is a self-portrait commissioned in 1963 and he leaned towards a more Surrealist style. The painting has left many interpretations to be discussed. It consisted of a man, standing in front of a seaside with an apple in front of his face and features a bowler hat – a familiar motif in his work. The apple in front of him does not cover his full face, it leaves the sides uncovered and crating curiosity of what the man’s face may look like. When he was asked to shed light on its meaning, he said, “Everything we see hides another thing, we always want to see what is hidden by what we see." Some theories suggest that the apple motif could be a reference to Christianity where the apple may suggest knowledge, temptation and the fall of man. This is one of the most recognizable works from Surrealism and continues to be represented and/or parodied in pop culture.
