Historical Context

Following the Muslim invasion of 711 and the establishment of the Umayyad Caliphate, Christian communities living under Muslim rule maintained their religious practices while adapting to Islamic culture. These Mozarabic communities developed a distinct artistic style that blended northern Christian traditions with southern Muslim influences. The shifting of the Christian-Muslim frontier to the river Duero basin led to the construction of new temples, concentrating all available artistic capacity to meet repopulation needs.

Characteristics

Mozarabic art is characterized by its great formal variety and originality within European pre-Romanesque art. Constructions showcase a unique blend of styles, experimenting with vaulted structures, domes, capitals, reliefs, and the "Roman" mural painting technique with Andalusian influence.

Notable Examples

Two exceptional subgroups of Mozarabic temples are those in the distinctive art of the Kingdom of León or fusion art, such as Santiago de Peñalba and San Miguel de Escalada. These temples display Cordoban influences and are considered two of the great artistic achievements in frontier society during the 10th century.

Mozarabic Rite

The Mozarabic Rite, also known as the Hispanic or Visigothic Rite, is a liturgical rite of the Latin Church that originated in the Iberian Peninsula during the Visigothic period. After experiencing a decline during the Reconquista, efforts were taken in the 16th century to revive the rite and ensure its continued presence in Toledo, where it is still celebrated today.
